46th Annual Tirebiters Classic Race
The 46th annual Tirebiter’s classic ski race was held on lower Arrowhead Loop at the base of the Mary Jane last Friday the 16th. The Tirebiter is held on St Patty’s day weekend every year and is named in honor of the Firesign Theatre’s George Leroy Tirebiter. The race consists of a slalom course set up by Winter Park Race crew , and is open to all skiiers ages 21- whatever. The race benefits the local grade school and high school ski programs and everyone from beginners to experts are invited. It was originally held at the old Silver Creek Ski Area and the gates were actually old tires!
The race no longer has the tires, they’ve been replaced by slalom gates, but the fun continues! The race is put on each year by local skiing legend and hall of famer Bob Singley and his long time assistant Lauren Gompertz, owner of Rocky Mountain Interiors in Granby.
It consists of men and women’s age brackets starting at age 21 and broken down into 10 year increments The oldest racers this year were in their 80’s proving you’re never too old to have fun! So,make sure you come out next St Patty’s and have tons of fun, while benefiting the local school kids as well!!!!
