Grand Lake Colorado, home of the largest natural lake in the state has always been a vacation paradise in the heart of the Rockies. Like a movie scene out of the old west, characters throughout history have stopped, stayed and made Grand Lake their home looking for a better life.

One such character opened “Squeaky Bob’s” Restaurant, in the mid-1900’s, originally occupied the Grand Lake  space, now called “Squeaky B’s.”

“Squeaky Bob” Wheeler, so named because of his high-pitched voice, homesteaded 160 acres in Grand Lake’s Phantom Valley after serving with Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders in the Spanish-American War.  Wheeler, an exceptional cook and storyteller, decided to open a tent-cabin resort along the Colorado River. The lumpy mattresses and extremely primitive accommodations were easily forgotten by most guests as they enjoyed a lively yarn spun by “Squeaky Bob” combined with his excellent meals, and as rumor has it some of the best “home brew” in the country. He was so popular with the increasing number of visitors to Grand Lake that he expanded his tent cabins and called his main lodge “Hotel de Hardscrabble” often frequented by Teddy Roosevelt himself!

It is said that Squeaky Bob loved a good burger and cooking with fresh ingredients and his establishment became famous for great food and spirits.

Deb Fitch Grand Lake restaurateur said, “To honor the legend of Squeaky Bob, we named the restaurant Squeaky B’s and we serve all natural, prime Red Angus beef from Colorado ranchers. We source our brats from Colorado specialty meat artisans, find local and premium ice creams and always make our fries fresh each day.”

Fitch reopened the restaurant that once was Squeaky Bobs last spring after undergoing some renovations, menu change and an infusion of live music. Squeaky B’s showcased a collection of musicians and bands on their outdoor stage last summer summer. Fitch said, We love music and want this restaurant to carry on the traditions of  Quality food, service and experience.” saying “live music and the arts are a huge part of the vibe of the Grand Lake community.”

Deb has some new things in the works she wanted to share.  They have recently purchased the old Putt Putt Golf course next door and are renovating to create an outdoor winter venue featuring a teapot curling rink, outside fire pit with s’mores kits and an area hosting snowman making contests.
